How to Know If You Have Prostate Cancer
Updated: March 7, 2024
Prostate cancer has become a pandemic, similar to influenza, considering the number of deaths. If you are a male over 50 years old, consult your doctor for a prostate cancer exam. The cancer might be spreading throughout your body without your knowledge.
In England, there's an awareness campaign called "Pants in the Park", which supports the work of Prostate Cancer UK in fighting prostate diseases.
If you are a dad, consider the following. These simple daily habits will help you diagnose prostate problems in advance:
- Difficulty urinating unless you exert effort.
- Intermittent urine flow.
- Persistent urge to urinate.
- Frequent need to urinate at night.
Many elderly people attribute these symptoms to age. But, if you consider it that way, why do such symptoms appear in old age?
The prostate plays a very important role in semen production, with instructions originating from the testicles. However, the quantity of male hormones gradually declines with age. If the male hormones decrease, the prostate gland will attempt to enlarge to conserve the male hormones. This condition is called "prostate enlargement" or "benign prostatic hypertrophy". We believe that this symptom typically occurs in more than 50% of males over the age of 50.
From the illustration above, imagine the enlarged prostate pressing the urinary duct, making it difficult for urine to pass. Prostate cancer and prostate enlargement show the same symptoms, thus many think that "it is just because of age".
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is one of the methods for finding cancer cells, but we recommend that you take a cancer blood test. MRI might miss very small cancer cells. We still recommend diagnosing prostate cancer by means of a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test.
As a precaution, avoid riding bicycles, walking long distances, and working hard before the PSA test.
Today, the number of people dying from prostate cancer is increasing. Protect your father and your loved ones. Detecting and treating prostate cancer at its early stage will help prevent the spread of cancer cells to other parts of the body.
